I have a Rega RP1 turntable that I got as an entrypoint into the wonderful world of vinyl. Now not surprisingly I'm hooked, and trying to figure out how to make it better. The RP1 has some limitations, the biggest is the tonearm. You can add all the upgrades and buy an upgraded cartridge, and it will still fall short of the RP3 or other tables at that level. The RP3 is fabulous. You will hear a significant improvement vs an RP1, particularly in bass response.
The Elys2 is a really good cartridge, the Exact2 is amazing. I just bought a second table and found that I am very much used to and prefer Rega's sound. The Music Hall's and ProJect tables sound great but are different. I feel like they have a more balanced, neutral sound which on the surface seems like it would be more appealing. You have to hear the difference between them to decide what you like better.
I spent some time listening to both and although I really, really like the Music Hall tables, I love the Rega's. I also have an RP1, but I had to overcome running new tonearm wire, build a new cardas, add high quality clips that don't break. That said, you don't run out to buy a new turntable once you've done that. The RP1 seems to be a better choice than the new Planar 1 and 2. Those don't give you an adjustable anti-skate. That is hard to beat in the MM lines. I went from an inexpensive preamp to the Musical Fidelity V which seems to match the AT cartridges.
That really improved the detail of my music, and then I added the Big Ben record stabilizer weight best for the money. The effect of the mat and weight is the best sound I've ever had, but it requires the top to be open at least an inch. Obviously this is not all required, but this is a cost effective way to improve the sound considerably.
Warning for different carts and thicker acrylic mat. You will need to raise the arm, but using the Rega spacer requires you to completely remove the arm and RCA cable and then re-attach it. You are only required to unscrew the arm on the platter and add the nylon spacers and screw the arm back on 15 minutesand it does not change the geometry, only the height.
Best Cartridge Upgrade for Rega Planar 2
Try this on many other brands and it isn't easy to do. If you improve to the 24 volt wall wart Rega motor it's several hundred from Needle Doctor. I will go with the replacement because the turntable is well made, the tonearm is exceptional with bearings in the arm both vertical and horizontal movement.
What I'm saying is you can bring you RP1 into the middle of the Rega pack with upgrades.Rega turntables are mounted on a single plinth with no suspension to provide isolation from external vibration. The arms have no VTA adjustment making them harder to use with non Rega cartridges, spacers are required which lift up the arm base, and this causes the lid to touch the counterweight!

Isolation from external vibration — turntables can vibrate due to sound from the loudspeakers, people walking or dancing! To cope with external vibration, most expensive turntables have a spring isolation system, rather like the suspension in your car. These turntables have two plinths. The top one houses the platter and arm while the lower plinth holds the motor and three or four springs that isolate the top platter. These turntables are expensive to manufacture and often require considerable tuning to set up properly.
Rega turntables have a single plinth usually made of MDF, sometimes plastic or foam with motor, arm and platter all mounted directly to it. This is done simply to save manufacturing costs and does nothing for performance! Rega turntables benefit greatly from a spring isolation system, which can elevate turntable performance considerably with little cost outlay. These screw on in place of the existing useless hard rubber feet and are customisable to the weight of your particular turntable.
What is happening during playback is that vibration from the stylus itself passes downward through the felt mat, hits the hard surface of glass and is immediately reflected back up again, to distort the movement of the stylus. Achromat is our patented solution to absorbing vibration energy from the critical interface between stylus, record and platter.

Vibrations pass back from the stylus at a whole range of frequencies into the arm, reflected back by the counterweight, causing the arm to bend and twist variably at different frequencies. Actually, all Rega 3s, of whatever stripe, going back in history, have been highly recommended. I currently use one as a reference. Rega really did hit on a working piece of hi-fi when they introduced the model.
Yet, every piece of hi-fi that has ever existed is the result of compromise. Compromise in terms of time and budget and the rest. This means that every piece of hi-fi and, certainly, every single turntable on the market has extra capacity for improvement. Those improvements might be as straightforward as installing a new and better cartridge but they might also derive from more drastic improvements.
At least with the Rega 3 and its Rage II upgrade kit to improve the performance of the basic model. Or are you going to lift your current deck to new sonic heights?
Also, Rega 3 owners love their turntables and they love the sound they offer. That step into the unknown is always one taken with trepidation.
The mistake could be very costly. Another reason? You want the Rega to be able to reach a bit further, in other words. Again, an ideal reason for an upgrade rather than dumping the thing and starting again. They could also be used to upgrade the likes of the Planar 2, 25, RP3, 5 and 6.
Ask The Funk Firm for an extended list of model options. Also, you can purchase each of the upgrades separately but the entire upgrade kit is called the Rage II. Two actual thicknesses are available: 3mm and 5mm. In tests, the 5mm consistently betters the 3mm mat. So, wherever possible, go for the 5mm. Trouble is, arms with no VTA such as the Rega are awkward to adjust. They are commonly found on decks with felt mats about 3mm thick.
This particular mat is also useful for decks with short spindles where 5mm would cause problems. Next is the MDF plinth, supported on three simple and rather hard feet. By contrast, all high end turntables are isolated.
It therefore makes sense that an isolation system will immediately provide considerable benefits.The Funk Firm makes turntables, tonearms, and Achromat pure vinyl replacements for the often-ghastly fuzzy slip-mats on turntables. But what it is also produces is a range of upgrades for popular turntables. The Rage upgrades tested here, for example, are designed to upgrade turntables from the ever-popular Rega stable. Theoretically, anything from a year-old Rega Planar 3 up to the latest models in the line are ripe for Rage.
While the exuberance is understandable given the performance of the products, it could do with some simplification, so here goes. The Funk Firm offers three points of upgrade to a Rega; feet, mat, and arm.
There are two grades of arm. You can upgrade in steps start with the Achromat, then add the feet, finally arming yourselfor you can just choose one of the two complete upgrade paths; Rage 2 — that includes the F7 arm — and the Rage 1 tested herewhich upgrades the arm to an FXR arm. In both cases, the arm uses the Rega bearing housing and mount, upgrading the arm-tube and modifying the bias adjustment to be a contrast linear design.
There is a small price penalty if you build up the Rage in steps, so we went with the complete package. The 5mm Achromat is a direct drop-in replacement for the fuzzy mat supplied by Rega. The Achromat is made of thick vinyl, on the grounds that the best interface between record and platter is the same material as the record.
The Bo! As the name suggests, these feet have a trio of small springs that connect the foot to the downward point of the outrigger, effectively making the feet into a surprisingly bouncy suspended turntable system. These add about 30mm to the height of the turntable.
The Achromat and Bo! They also allow the listener to roll back the changes in a way the arm does not, although why you would want to do that remains unclear, because the overall change is such a force for good. Of course, this also means a lot hangs on the performance of the arm. Viewed as an upgrade, it replaces the arm-tube, the horizontal bearings, improves the anti-skate system, and central column The result is an arm with unparalleled levels of arm resonance control, meaning a vastly more linear frequency response.Disclaimer :.

Spoiler alert! The current version of the Rega Planar 2 was launched in and sits between the affordable Rega Planar 1 and the audiophile approved Rega Planar 3. Its reception among Hi-Fi journalists and critics has been exceptionally good. Just as for most Rega products. And, as I later discovered, it is absolutely possible to take the Planar 2 to yet another level of sonic performance with a cartridge upgrade. The Planar 2 comes standard with a Rega Carbon cartridge.
And that cartridge might actually be the weakest part of the turntable. In my ears, the Rega Carbon has an even level of sonic performance throughout the frequency range. It is hard to point at one specific frequency range that is its weakest point. What I felt lacking a bit with the Rega Carbon, in general, was dynamic and precision throughout the frequency range.
It sounded a little lazy and lacked a bit of presence and engagement. The unit that transforms the physical grooves in the record into an electrical music signal.
